Joomla 1.6 and category management |
Joomla 1.6 incorporates many new concepts including a new category management. In previous versions, content management is done through the sections and categories. A section may contain several categories, and an article may belong to any category is either one and only.
Finished sections, hello Categories
With Joomla 1.6, there is no longer the concept of division, it has been replaced by the notion of nested categories. You'll be able to create according to your needs hierarchical structure of categories. Each category can belong to a class and a parent category can have multiple categories children.
There is no limit to the number of nesting levels. However, beyond 3 or 4 levels, this could have a negative impact on the visibility of your content by search engines.

The first thing we must do is create a new category. This is not very different from version 1.5, you simply enter the menu and Content Management categories and click the New button. Enter the category name and click Save or Save and better again that is a very handy new features in this version 1.6 that will allow you to directly create the new category page without going through category management.
The second step is to create a sub-category. For that, after giving him a name, you must select the category you just created in the Category menu parent.
Then you either click on Save or Save and New if you want to create a class of 3rd level:
As you can see, you can create as many sub-categories you want. Here is a screen shot examples of categories that we just created.
Contrary to Joomla 1.5 , you can in managing categories show their hierarchy and their aliases.
Now if you create a new article, you will be able to select the category you want the link:
To summarize, the new category management is much more flexible management of sections and categories found in version 1.5. Although this is not implemented yet, hopefully the system's URL rewriting Joomla replicate the categories in URLs. Anyway, this functionality will be integrated in any ways extensions of rewriting URLs.

The categories and metadata{mosgoogle}
In Joomla 1.5, it was not possible to associate metadata to sections or categories. This feature was added in version 1.6. Now you'll be able to combine them for each class a description and keywords. In addition to metadata, you can also assign your own title page, identify the author as well as select access to the robots.
Conclusion
The new category management with Joomla 1.6 is more logical and flexible than the system currently implemented in version 1.5 of Joomla. It will be interesting to see how developers will manage and integrate this new way of categorizing content into their own extensions.
The migration script from version 1.5 to version 1.6 is not yet available. However, it is certain that the conversion of sections and categories to the concept of nested categories will be fully integrated into the script. |
