Joomla 1.6 and improved content management |
Joomla 1.6 incorporates many improvements over version 1.5 that can only rejoice. It's been several years since I worked with version 1.5 and finally I realize that you get used to everything ... Now that Joomla 1.6 is finalized, I can only rejoice in the final version because many convenient features for content management will greatly ease the lives of users of Joomla! As I write this article, the French language version of the beta was still not integrated. Copies screen thus contain labels in English. New buttons or Save and New Copy In Joomla 1.5 we find the Save buttons, Apply and Close to most content. In version 1.6 there are new functions to create and edit content all placed in the top right of the administration interface.
After clicking the New button, here are the new buttons on the edit page of an article: Button and save new item - Joomla 1.6 Save and New button allows you to save the item being edited and create a new one without having to go through the management page articles. After saving the article here are the buttons available: Article save button and copy - Joomla 1.6 The new Save and Copy button appears allowing you when you open an item or save a new section to make a copy. Also note the wording of the red button with the white cross that goes from Cancel to Close. In the module manager and in most of the components, we find the same logic except that icons are somewhat different in every case in the version of Joomla 1.6 beta 4. Button and save the new module - Joomla 1.6 After clicking the New button in the module manager and have chosen the type of custom HTML module, here is what looks like the buttons: Button to save and copy module - Joomla 1.6 Even if the icons are different, their functionality remains the same: * Saving: In version 1.5 the button called Apply and saves the current job and stay on the current page. * Save and Close: In version 1.5 and the button called Save saves the current job and return to the previous screen (article manager, module ...) * Save and New: To save the current job and create a new item without going through the manager of the item. This saves time when you have several such articles to write one after the other. * Save and Copy: To save work in progress and create an exact copy of the current element. This also saves you considerable time when you need to create multiple items with such parameters or identical configuration. * Cancel / Close: Depending on the Edit button will be the same but the wording may change. Clicking this button will undo the changes made since the last backup or open the item. Viewing the contents of a locked item In version 1.5 of Joomla, it is not possible to access an item locked (being edited) by someone else. In version 1.6 it is now possible to access a locked item without being able to change. This improvement may seem trivial but you will solve two types of situations often encountered: * For example, when you're forming a remote client, you can open with version 1.6 the same element which is not currently the case. This will allow you to access the content of the item while your client may change. * Combined with the functionality Save and Copy, then it is possible to open an item being edited by another user and make a copy of it. This will save you time because you must now wait until the user has saved the item before you can access it. Display module on all pages except this one In version 1.6 there is a new option that will allow you to simplify your life and that of your client: Associate a module to a menu item - Joomla 1.6 In the section menu assignment module you can assign it to all pages, no page or so to menu items (pages) you have selected. In version 1.6 a new option was added allowing you to display the module on all pages except the menu items (pages) selected. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages and you do not want a module is displayed on the homepage. Today you can do it but when you add a new menu item (new page) you'll have to edit all the modules and select the new menu item which can be tedious for large content sites. You can now perform this assignment modules directly from a menu item without going through the modules that you will also save considerable time. Your session has expired How many times did this happen? You are working in the administration of your Joomla site and you receive a call. 16 minutes later, you return to the administration and you receive a message informing you that your session has expired. Joomla does not remember what part of the administration you were and what you were doing. With Joomla 1.6, if your session times out you are disconnected from the administration of your site but when you log in again, Joomla try to get you back where you were. If you were creating a new module, Joomla will display the module manager. If you were to edit a Joomla article will open the article you were editing. Menu item by default In version 1.5 of Joomla, you can define which page should be displayed by default when someone accesses your domain name. So you must access the management page of the menu items on your site and check the menu item in question and then click the Default button containing the yellow star. In version 1.6 of Joomla, the wording of this option will be replaced by Home or homepage. So when you edit an article, you can not view or homepage. As there is only one element set as home page, this feature limits the display of the relevant articles on this page. In version 1.6, this notion of home page for the items featured was replaced, French emphasized. This will allow you to have multiple pages that can contain items highlighted. For example, you could very well have a page in your Joomla site displaying all items put forward for a class data. The media manager improves Several improvements were made to the media manager. First, note that the menu is no longer in Site Management and the media but in the section of content management. With version 1.5 , when you need to change the settings of media manager, you must access the general configuration of your site that is not quite logical. In version 1.6, access to parameters is done directly from the media manager through the display of a new Options button.{mosgoogle} Also, a recurring problem on the activation of the Flash uploader lets you select multiple files at once has been fixed. In fact, in version 1.5 by activating this option, it often happened that a conflict between Joomla and Flash 10 appears making this feature obsolete and therefore mostly unused. In version 1.6, this compatibility problem has been corrected. Finally, the default directory used by the media manager is not the directory / stories but the root directory of your site. Also all images present in the default directory / stories have been suppressed because they were often not used. Trash functionality This time the functionality of the basket works well as a basket in most types of elements. We'll take the example of the trash in the management of articles. Feature of the basket - Joomla 16 To view the articles had been removed, simply change the selection filter concerned. No need to go through the Content menu and then Trash section which is much more logical! To remove an item nothing new just click on the Trash button. |
